Understanding Acupuncture

According to Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body’s motivating energy, known as qi, moving in a smooth and balanced way through a network of channels beneath the skin. Qi is spread throughout the body by twelve major channels which each supply one of our physical organs, and through a countless number of interconnecting channels. When qi becomes unbalanced, illness may result. Any number of factors can disturb the flow of qi. These include emotional states such as anxiety, worry, grief, fear or anger. Environmental factors like weather conditions or infections. Others can be; hereditary or dietary factors, inappropriate use of alcohol or drugs, stress, overwork, lack of (or unsuitable) exercise and physical trauma such as operations or accidents.

Chinese medicine diagnosis is a way of understanding the causes of a particular condition. It analyses why and how the balance of energies has been disturbed and which organs and channels are affected. Acupuncture treatment is a way of restoring that balance by utilising the enormous potential of the human body to adjust, repair and rebalance itself. It dispels congestion, strengthens weakness and stimulates the body’s own healing response. Treatment is aimed at the root of a condition as well as the symptoms. This approach can lead to a more permanent resolution of the problem.
